Exercise Addiction

There are those who need to be coerced into exercising while there are others who are required to cut down on their workouts. People who indulge in extreme exercising give up on their family life, friends and priorities. It becomes an addiction. This condition is known by a variety of terms like exercise dependence, exercise addiction, obligatory exercise, compulsive athleticism, and exercise abuse.

There are researches carried on this field trying to find out the key reasons and its impact on the victims. I address these people as victims because it must be a need to overdo exercising. This could be due to lack of self confidence, someone who has had an eating disorder in their formative years or who had once been obese and are scared to get back to their original weight. It is deeply linked to one own projection of his or her own body image. Excessive exercising can cause the following trauma to the body:

1) Extreme wear and tear of the muscles and tendons.

2) The lack of sufficient rest causes extreme fatigue.

3) Exercising in spite of fatigue causes injuries.

4) Ignoring the bodys needs to rest and the injuries can further lead to complications.

5) Cutting down on eating to get the perfect body shape.

6) Lack of proper diet and excessive workout causes weakness, breathlessness, mood swings and these ailments which will aggravate as the years goes by.

7) Sudden drop in the body fat which is essential for proper functioning of the body can make the body prone to thyroid and other related problems.

8) Excessive workouts cause extreme sweating and if the body is not replenished with sufficient fluids then it leads to dehydration.

9) There are chances of osteoporosis especially among women.

10) Handling daily activities becomes difficult as the mind is overwhelmed with the physical pain and people tend to loose their temper.

Exercise addiction is the new age phenomenon. It is caused by poor self image, aping the celebrities and models and lack of confidence. This should not be encouraged as a wonderful way to look slim and curvaceous. Victims of this addiction should be made aware of the possible health problems that they are likely to face in the future.
